Toyota and Lexus Recall Floor Mats
By Car Dude
Toyota has just begun its largest ever recall with over 4 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles with potential safety problems. In the fall of 2009 the NHTSA got a lot of reports that driver’s side floor mats were becoming displaced and causing the accelerator pedal stick. A policeman and his family were killed, bringing the issue to the attention of the nation. His Lexus crashed after traveling more than 120 mph as a result of a stuck gas pedal. Apparently brakes alone were not sufficient to stop the vehicle. Toyota responded by issuing a safety alert recommending that car owners remove the driver’s side floor mats and keep them out until Toyota could explore the matter further. The NTHSA also urged owners to remove mats or any other obstacles that could cause the car to accelerate. Here are the cars and trucks with potential safety issues: • 2005 - 2010 Toyota Tacoma • 2005 - 2010 Toyota Avalon • 2004 - 2009 Toyota Prius • 2007 - 2010 Toyota Tundra • 2007 - 2010 Toyota Camry • 2007 - 2010 Lexus ES350 • 2006 - 2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350 Toyota and Lexus service technicians are now trained and equipped to make the necessary adjustments to these vehicles. It seems like it would be an effortless repair; just replace the defective floor mats with a better design, Toyota wants to ensure the safety of their vehicles. Technicians will actually be reshaping the gas pedal and in some models will also install a brake override system. Beginning in April 2010 there will be accelerator pedal replacement part available for those customers that would like to have it installed. Toyota has started issuing recall letters instructing car owners to bring their vehicles in for repair and they expect a deluge in their service departments. To help alleviate the inconvenience many Toyota Dealerships are offering rental cars to owners affected by the recall. The official offers more information about the Toyota/Lexus recall including overall safety of both.
